I've been saying for a while that the PS3/360 are as played out as a Dane Cook routine (and consequently, Dane Cook hate). That, after almost a decade, somebody has finally said "Alright, fuck these old geezer consoles" is enough to make me excited on its own. What makes the whole thing even better is.....damn, Sony seems to actually know what it's doing for once!

From a certain perspective, the roles of Microsoft and Sony appear to be reversed from their positions coming into the current gen. With the PS3, Sony was an arrogant giant without a shred of humility, while Microsoft was the scrappy underdog eager to prove itself to gamers and developers. As of 2013, Microsoft has become a bloated, cocky authoritarian monster. It has alienated developers with its strict policies and closed systems, and alienated gamers with its laser-like focus on multimedia over gaming and its advertisement cluttered dashboard. As a gamer, I feel more disaffected by Microsoft now than I did when Nintendo marketed the Wii exclusively to my grandma.
With the PS4, Sony seems to be saying "Dudes, I know." The major themes of Sony's recent conference were games, gaming, and the gamer. They didn't show an hour of all the ways you can watch Honey Boo Boo on the thing, they focused on what we actually care about. Everything about the thing seems designed to make things as developer and gamer friendly as possible, a 180 degree turn from where they were at the beginning of this gen, and even further from the direction Microsoft seems determined to explore. I imagine Microsoft won't wait too long to respond with a reveal of its own, but I'm certain that if they don't reassess their position in the market they will be back in a few years begging the gamers who got them where they are to give them another chance.
Also....I'm pretty sure that guy at that conference has sex with cars....
"Oh, you like when I twist your wheel, don'tcha baby. Yeah.... Yeah..... Yeah! Hnnnng" |
BUT PS4 HAS NO GAEE--oh that doesn't work this time.
ReplyDeleteFinally!!!
ReplyDeleteI have high hopes for the nextbox now... The bar has been set pretty high.
I'm very interested in what Sony can do with Gaikai, and the streaming / coop stuff looked awesome - although why the controller needs a stupid laptop mousepad built-in I don't know (or like)...
I'll be waiting a year or so anyway, mostly cos I'm a cheap bastard, and I haven't even finished half of my 360 games yet... But Sony does look good - whichever has the most gaming / least social networking will be the one I buy... Probably... Possibly... Um...
I may just buy the shiniest one.
It's an awful shame, but I think M$ is going to end up blowing off gamers in favour of facebook users.
ReplyDeleteThankfully, it doesn't look like Sony is going to make that mistake.
